Still Seperate Still Unequal (quotes)

"If you do what I tell you to do, how i tell you to do it, when i tell you to do it, you'll get it right"
This quote relates to my essay prompt because it shows the mentality of teaching in low income schools. Teachers run their classes as if they were drill sergeants telling students to follow every direction exactly. This affects the quality of students education because they don't get the chance to be creative and figure out problems on their own.
"In the 94 percent of districts in New York State where white children make up the majority, nearly 80 percent of students graduate high school in four years. In the 6 percent of districts where black and Hispanic students make up the majority only 40 percent do so."
This quote shows a direct link to social class and success as stated in my essay. Statistics show that high schools dominated by minorities tend to have really low graduation rates. If students don't graduate high school than their chances of being successful go down tremendously.
"When minority parents ask for something better for their kids, she says "the assumption is that these are parents who can be discounted. These are kids who just don't count children we don't value."
In my essay I wrote about how social class affects a persons chances for success. This statement shows that people who are of a lower social class are looked at as invaluable and their opinion isn't really taken into consideration. Even if their child's school is falling apart and doesn't have any updated facilities such as science labs and text books they can't do anything about it. This shows that even if children in lower social classes work hard in school and get good grades they are credited less than wealthier students. This could cause problems in the future for children in lower social classes when looking at colleges and for jobs.
"This, then, is the accusation that Alliyah and her classmates send our way "You have... We do not have."
Children in low social classes that go to low income school's do not get the same opportunities and perks as children in wealthier districts. Many school's don't even let younger children have recess, keep the bathroom's clean, or update any of their classrooms. Mold could be growing all over walls while streams of water come into the building when it rains and nothing would be done about it. How can children in these school's be expected to do the same as wealthier students, when the place they go to learn and become successful looks like a run down warehouse?

Language Questions
1. Students 100% should have the right to their own language. If someone is forced to speak a language they don't understand especially when it has to do with schoolwork than completing assignment can become very difficult. The assignments will take much longer to do and the quality of work won't be as good as it could be if done in their native language.
2.Students, artists, and football players should have the right to freely express themselves because it is a right given to them from the constitution. From birth until death everyone in the United States has freedom of speech and should be allowed to say what they want. Even Nfl players shouldn't have to sensor themselves because if they do then their rights are being violated.
3.Students should always have the right to their own language. When doing schoolwork it is not fair to be forced into writing something in english if you grew up learning how to speak spanish, Chinese, or any other language.
4. The use of RENNS affects the quality of a students voice, language, and identity in a positive way. RENNS helps students to write in a more professional way. It helps to make their writing more clear and also has students back up their statements with facts. RENNS can also be helpful for students by getting them to write in more creative and detailed ways.

Identity is a word that almost everyone has
their own meaning of. Gloria Anzaldua the author of “How To Tame A Wild Tongue”
states that “Wild tongues can’t be tamed, they can only be cut out.”(Anzaldua247)
Gloria writes this because she believes her language is a major part of her
identity and you can’t just control somebody’s identity much like the language
they speak. When defining identity there are a lot of factors that go into it.
People are identified by language, wealth, appearance, personality, race, and
many other things. One of the largest influences on a person’s identity would
be their race. No matter who you are or where you live you have an identity
that defines you as a person.
“How To Tame A Wild Tongue” is a
story written by Gloria Anzaldua which explains the fight Mexican Americans go
through everyday trying to sustain their identity in the U.S through their
native tongues. Gloria states “We know what it is to live under the hammer blow
of the dominant norteamericano culture.”(Anzaldua254) Throughout Gloria
Anzaldua’s writing she explains that her language is the most prominent representation
of her identity. Anzaldua tells us about the many variations of Spanish that
she had picked up throughout growing up, and how in America her language is
oppressed. The reason she feels that her language is oppresses is because the
general public wants her to learn English. The problem with this is that Gloria
sees her language as a representation of she is. If Gloria were to give up her
Spanish tongue than she would be attempting to be something she’s not.
My identity is important to me
because it shapes how I am viewed by society. Race in my opinion can play a
major role in the type of friends you have, sports you play, and even what
neighborhood you live in. For example,
when I was in middle school I loved playing basketball. I would go to the park
near my house and play with other kids from the neighborhood. One day when I had
arrived at the court I was the only person there that was white. I wasn’t really bothered by it but, when I
asked to play someone said "This sport isn’t for white people" and
they all laughed. This relates to Anzaldua’s writing because it is stated “If
you want to be American, speak American.”(Anzaldua247) Gloria Anzaldua was
being rejected for her tongue and I was rejected for my color.
Ever since I was a child I have never
cared about what race someone was. The way I thought of it was that if you
treated me with respect than I would respect you back no matter what color skin
you had. As I’ve grown older reality has shown me that not everyone thinks the
same as I do. Whether it was in school or on the street, there have been many
times where I’ve heard people make racial statements or do something unkind to
someone of another color. To this day
there are still groups such as the KKK who discriminate against people for the
color of their skin, African Americans in particular.
Being racist is not something people
are born with they are taught it either by their family or the people they
interact with outside of home. In “How To Tame A Wild Tongue” Gloria Anzaldua
states “when we know we are more than nothing we call ourselves Mexican,
referring to race and ancestry.”(Anzaldua254) The problem I have with this
statement is the part when she says “when we know we are more than
nothing.”(Anzaldua254)No matter what race you are you are never considered
worthless because, every race has a history some more harsh than others. You
should be proud of what you come from and embrace your culture otherwise you’re
pretending to be something you’re not.
No matter who you are or where you
live you have an identity that defines you as a person. The reason identity is
important to me is because no one else can have my identity but me and I am
proud to be who I am. Everything I have done in life whether I’m proud of it or
not has shaped me into what I am now. All the years of school, the people I’ve
met, my teachers, my family, my race, the different places I’ve seen, and even
the type of dog I have has had an impact in my life and affected my identity.
Without an identity I am nothing but a lost person and it is the same for
everyone else. As long as I have my identity than I will always have something
to be proud of, it doesn’t matter what color I am.

Identity is a word that almost everyone has
their own meaning of. No matter who you are or where you live you have an
identity that defines you as a person. When defining identity there are a lot
of factors that go into it. People are identified by language, wealth, appearance,
personality, race, and many other things. The largest factor on somebody’s
identity in my eyes is their race.
Ever since I was a child I have never
cared about what race someone was. The way I thought of it was that if you

someone who was another color. To this
day there are still groups such as the KKK who discriminate against people for
the color of their skin, African Americans in particular.
People do not choose there skin color it is something they are born with due to the genetics of their parents. The reason I believe that race is a major factor in how you are identified is because there have been many moments in my life where being white has affected me. For example when I was in middle school I loved playing basketball. I would go to the park near my house and play with other kids from the neighborhood. How To Tame A Wild Tongue
Jack Wilmott

Writing Skills Workshop 1100
1.
The
opening scene of Anzaldua in the dentist chair connects to the overall
point/message of the essay and title because it represents how the native
tongues of Mexican Americans are constantly being restricted by society. In the
scene the dentist is trying to hold her tongue in place in order to work on her
teeth but it keeps forcing its way back into place. This represents the fight
Mexican Americans struggle with every day because society is trying to
Americanize them by making them lose their accents and speak even though it’s
just not who they are.
2. 2. Anzaldua’s
use of Spanish throughout the writing made sense because it is a way in which
Mexican Americans are adapting to our culture. The purpose of it was to show
the pressures put on a specific group of people to change who they are and what
their culture is.
3.
3. Academic
English and standard Spanish can be defined as the same because they are both
the proper forms of speaking each language. Chicano Spanish can be described as
non-standard because it may still be the same language but there are many
differences in the way in which things are said. It also can be considered
no-standard because it is a version of the language that was made by a specific
group of people meaning not everyone that speaks Spanish would understand it. One
conclusion that can be made from referring one language as standard versus
nonstandard is that different people speak differently, and what one person
identifies as standard may differ from what another person who speaks the same
language considers standard. It has to do with how and where you grew up which
factors into how people are identified by others.
4. 4. Speaking
and writing in academic English is a necessary component of identity because in
many people’s opinions it shows your understanding of the language and whether
or not you have been Americanized. Speaking in academic English may not be
necessary when with friends or family but it is in the business world. For
example if you go out for a job and the person hiring you feels that you don’t
fully understand the language you may have a much less likely chance of getting
the job or you may be thought of as a different category of people in their
eyes.
5. 5. The
English language has many variations depending on where you live. The most
common variation in the U.S. which is commonly used in the business world would
probably be standard English. Another variation which is called ELF is a form
of English used by people who’s first language isn’t English. One more
variation I know of is British English which is the form of English that people
in Britain use. The language is the same but there are many variations of words
for example instead of fries people from Britain call them chips.
6. 6. Personally
I do not use a secret language or identity to talk to friends but there are
definitely certain words we use sometimes that mean different things to us than
those around us.
7. 7.When
talking to friends I use non-standard English. If I am in a conversation with
my mother or professor than I use standard English because it is more
respectful to speak that way to them rather than in slang like I would with friends.
8. 8. The
statement “I Am My Language” means that your primary language is a key factor
of what makes up who you are as a person. This statement connects to a person’s
identity because when being identified if you speak a different language than
the person you’re talking to than they categorize you into a group of people
different than themselves just based upon how you speak.
9. 9. The introduction and conclusion in the story
connect because in the intro the dentist is trying to control her tongue no
matter how stubborn it was being. Even though he kept putting it in a certain
position it naturally went back to its original place. In the conclusion it is
stated “When other races have given up their tongue, we’ve kept ours”. which
means that when other races were pressured to change the way they were they did
but, Mexican American’s stayed how they were no matter how much society tried
to change them like when the dentist was trying to force Anzaldua’s tongue into
a position it wasn’t meant to be in.
1
10. The language you
speak definitely factors into your identity. This is because the language you
speak with can change the way you pronounce things, understand what other
people are trying to say, and can even have a major effect on how you live at
home with your family.
1
11. Identity is very
important to me. Your identity controls what people think when they first meet
you and even when you are good friends. It is easy to say that Gloria Anzaldua
believes identity is important because of how strongly she feels about preserving
her tongue. One example proving that Anzaldua thinks identity is important is
when she states “A language which they can connect their identity to, one
capable of communicating the realities and values true to themselves”. Another
example showing that Anzaldua cares a lot about identity is when she states “If
a person Chicana or Latina has low estimation of my native tongue, she also has
low estimation of me.” This statement shows that she cares about what other
people think about her based on her identity because language is a major factor
of peoples identities.

Getting To Know Me (Assignment 1)
Jack Wilmott
English 1100
1 September 2016
Prof. Young
1.The main sport I play is football and i have been playing it for five years.
2. I am most passionate about listening to music in my free time.
3. The most ridiculous lie I have ever told was when i was in about fourth grade I walked into the vestibule which is a small room you have to go through before you get in my house where everyone puts shoes. It was after school and i had text books in my back pack and when I turned to take my shoes off my bag broke the window. The hole was huge and i didn't want to get in trouble so i found a brick and put it in the vestibule to make it look like someone was messing with our house. Long story short the cops came but my parents eventually stopped caring and to this day they still don't know it was me.
4.When I write I always just sit and wait for the words to flow.
5. So far my writing experience has gone pretty well. What I most want to learn from this course is how to become a more fluent writer.
6. The most recent book I have read cover to cover is "Long Day's Journey Into Night"
7. I post on social media not very often but usually every couple of weeks.
8. The most important thing to learn this semester in my opinion is how to write lengthy essays without having to much trouble.
9. My definition of identity is what you are seen as by the people around you whether it be the actions you perform, the way you look, and or your personality.
10. An important issue to me would have to be racism. I have an African American girlfriend that I've been with for about ten months now. Many times when we go out in public we'll get really dirty looks from people especially the elderly. In my opinion the reason racism is ignorant is because there is only one race of humans. The only reason our skin color and other features are different is due to how close you or your ancestors live to the equator and what your surroundings are.
11.As a writer I rate myself as a C. This is because I never really have spent much time out of school trying to improve my writing. My skills could definitely use improvement.
